Prepare to Log the Planet....

Games

With limited space, the games we bring must be small and versatile. Here is a short list.

Football Board Game

Uriah and I created a football board game that can compete with anything Parker Brothers has ever but on the market. It consists of several sheets of paper, a light cardboard field, a pair of dice and some home made cards. Each game takes about an hour to play. If I ever get the time, I'll put the rules and templates online.

Card Games

The amount of things you can do with a deck of cards is incredible. Forget the thousands of card games for all ages. With the younger kids you can build a House of Cards, or toss them into hats. Combination dice and cards games are also great. We taught all our kids Gin, Hearts and even mini-Bridge. And you can always play poker for chores.

Coin Games

Coin Baseball: Any set of coins will work for this. Penny size coins are the best. You place the pennies as you would set the field on a baseball diamond. The diamond is about one meter from home plate to center field. Use anything to mark the home-run fence. A smaller dime-sized coin is the ball. The pitcher flicks the dime towards home plate, and the batter, using his thumb or index finger swings at the approaching coin. If the dime hits an outfielder, he's out. If it clears the infield it's a single, if it clears the outfielders it's a double, if it's within 10 cm from the fence, it's a triple. If it hits the fence it's a home run.

Coin Hockey: A well know game using three coins (penny-size) and a flat table. Three coins always create a triangle. The imaginary line that connects any two coins is the line that the third coin must pass through to continue driving toward the goal. The players take turns shooting the coins. When a coin hits another coin or fails to break the plane of the imaginary line, the turn is over. Goals are formed using your index finger and pinky over the side of the table. A coin shot into the goal is a goal.

Hiking Games

20 questions: The perfect game to keep the kids from realizing how far they have been walking.

Singer/Song Game: One person gives two letters, the first being the first letter in the last name of a singer, or the first letter of the name of a band, and the second letter is the first letter in the name of a song that singer/band sings. It has to be a known song. Any time someone guesses a song that fits the letters, but is not the correct song, he gets a yes or no question.

This game obviously is problematic with younger children (great for teenagers), but variations on the game are easy to create (Books and Authors, cartoons and cartoon characters, cities and countries, friends' first and last names, etc.).
