Madurai, India 22 Feb. 2002
We left the cool air of Kodaikannal and returned to the heat of the plains and to Madurai. Much like Thanjavur, we just picked Madurai because it was on the way to where we really wanted to get to, and it seemed to have some interesting attractions.

Madurai Temple
The Temple at Madurai is one of the largest in all of South India. We spent a morning there and actually found that the Temple at Thanjavur was much more impressive. The other attraction that caught our eye was the Gandhi Museum. This museum documented the personal history of Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the hundreds of years of resistance against British rule in India. Why is the Gandhi Museum in Madurai, you ask? Because Madurai was the place where Gandhi announced that he will only where a home spun loin cloth for the rest of his life. There even is an authentic loin cloth worn by Gandhiji himself in the museum. It was interesting, however, the children didn't appreciate it.
The other interesting event in Madurai was running into three 50 year old Israeli women in a restaurant (We ended up eating two meals with them). Tova, Batya and Ariella are traveling India for two weeks, leaving their families at home in Israel. As always, the kids enjoyed speaking Hebrew to acquaintances, and we all enjoyed each other's company. They even changed their plans and went to Kodaikannal following our meeting.
