Prepare to Log the Planet....

Preparations

From the moment that we began thinking about traveling, we began planning how to prepare ourselves for this trip. We knew that the children would need extra help to get ready, and we wanted to make some of the more difficult aspects of the trip just a bit easier by simply knowing what to expect.

You can read how it all began, and then come back to see how we prepared for it.

Preparation Meetings

We decided to meet weekly and try to cover as many aspects of the trip as possible. Here is a list of the weekly preparation meetings:

The Earth and the Solar System

You have to start somewhere, and we decided that moving from macro to micro was best.

Maps and mapping

The adults have no intention of navigating this whole trip by ourselves. This preparations will also help us answer the nagging question, "When are we going to get there?" We'll just toss them a map and say, "do the math."

Indian Food

We ordered in and talked about why it is so spicy.

Thai Culture: The Long Neck Tribe

We all read together a story about a young girl from a north Thailand tribe in the village of Mai Chi, who was being fit with neck rings that she would wear for the rest of her life. We compared that to what kind of things we do in our culture to distort our bodies.

The Vaisman Family Meeting

We took a few hours and met with the Vaisman family who has extensive experience traveling in India. After a while the kids got bored and jumped into the pool. We kept talking and received some very valuable information. Thanks.

Walking

We quickly realized that one of the most common activities on this trip will be walking. Not the type of walking that we are used to as a family - walking in nature, hiking - but rather the urban shuffle. So we had to prepare ourselves for this as well. We felt that the only way to do that was to practice in our own town, Bet Shemesh. But how do we get our kids (and the adults) to go along with this? The idea was simple, give our children incentive to walk with us. We are a family that rarely eats out. Perhaps once a month, and that's usually just for pizza. So we told our kids that they can eat anywhere they want as long as we walk to the restaurant from home. It worked. But coming home was a drag.

Child Buddhist Monks

We read a story about children in Burma (Myanmar) who are sent to become Buddhist monks. The story brought up subjects of cultural differences and religious beliefs. We then read a short story about Thai festivals that were compared to Purim.
